Bluebell Wood Limited Edition Print by William Rowsell

This print was inspired by walking behind my daughter through the woods when the bluebells were out. A carpet of blue surrounded her which worked beautifully with her bright pink wellington boots. She was 8 years old at the time and I wanted to capture her childhood before it flew by. I captured several images of her at the time that I will work into a series of prints.

This traditional woodland scene has been captured by artists over millenia, but I feel this image has a contemporary twist, in relation to the clothes she was wearing (eg. the pink Boden hoody). Without the clothing you wouldn't really know what period the picture is set.

Image Creation Process

I created the image by first making a digital composite of the photography I took on the day (See the image to the right). I then used that as visual reference when creating a drawing. The drawing was then captured on a copper plate by passing it through the press off tracing paper. I then redrew the image in hard ground on the plate before biting it. In the colour version the background colours and foliage were created by making a secondary plate. The marks for that were created with aquatint. I kept the marks very loose using a brush to mask areas out between bites with varnish.
